What AI buyers want from Slack
AI labs are training agents to do real work. Slack shows how people actually coordinate that work: who asks whom, how decisions get made, how a problem gets escalated, and how it gets resolved. Public text rarely shows this.
- Decision threads. A question, a debate and a final call. Enterprise buyers list "decision-making records" as a data type they want.
- Incident and escalation channels. Step-by-step handling of real problems.
- Channels tied to other systems. Threads that reference Jira tickets, pull requests or CRM deals.
Social chatter, memes and one-word replies add little.
What Slack data has sold for
| Deal or program | What was sold | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| cielo24 | Slack, email and Jira tickets | "Hundreds of thousands of dollars" | Fast Company |
| SimpleClosure (shutdown service) | Workspace data from closed startups | About $10K to $100K per deal, ~100 deals in a year | Forbes |
| Crypto startup via SimpleClosure | Workspace data | About $15K, pending | MIT Technology Review |
| Spirit Airlines (bankruptcy, not final) | Includes 500M Teams items plus email and files | Google $10M winning bid | Chapter 11 Cases |
Spirit used Microsoft Teams, not Slack, but it is the largest public workplace chat sale on record. The hearing is set for Oct 14, 2026, and the sale is not final.
What makes a workspace worth more
Sunset, a startup shutdown service, prices data on company size, age and "data richness," meaning how well records link across systems (Forbes). A Slack thread that points to a Jira ticket, which points to a code commit, is worth more than a thread on its own. Healthcare and finance data carry a premium with Sunset (MIT Technology Review), though those sectors also carry the heaviest privacy rules.
- More years of history
- Work channels over social channels
- Consistent links to tickets, docs and repos
- English-language content (enterprise programs require English)
Slack's API terms
Salesforce updated Slack's API terms in 2025 to restrict bulk export and the use of API-accessed data in LLMs (Hunton). Law firm Frankfurt Kurnit flags the same issue in its seller checklist (Frankfurt Kurnit). How you pull the data may matter as much as what you pull. Review your Slack plan and API terms with counsel before any export for a buyer. This is general information, not legal advice.
Employee privacy and labor law
- NLRA. Employee discussions about pay and working conditions may be protected under Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act (Frankfurt Kurnit).
- CCPA. California's "consumer" includes employees and B2B contacts. Transferring personal information for money may count as a "sale" unless the data meets the de-identification standard (Cal. Civ. Code 1798.140).
- Political pressure. In the Spirit case, 120+ members of Congress urged excluding employee data (Senate Commerce Committee).
- Exclusions. SimpleClosure excludes employee and health records from its sales (01net). Frankfurt Kurnit recommends excluding HR, health, privileged and union data entirely.
How to prepare Slack data
- Confirm your export method is allowed under your Slack terms.
- Drop HR, legal, union, health and social channels. Drop DMs unless counsel approves.
- Remove names, handles, emails and phone numbers. Replace them with consistent placeholders so threads still make sense.
- Scan for secrets: API keys, passwords and customer details pasted into chat.
- Keep the links between threads and tickets. Those links drive value.
- Have the buyer review samples before full delivery.

Operating vs. shutting-down companies
Most public Slack sales came from startups that had shut down. Their workspaces are closed, complete and no longer needed. An operating company can license Slack data too, but the employee and terms issues are harder while staff are still using the tool. Operating companies often start with SOPs and knowledge bases instead. If you are closing, read selling company data when closing a business.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sell my company's Slack messages to AI companies?
Companies have done it, mostly startups that shut down. You need to check Slack's API terms, remove personal data and consider employee privacy and labor law first. Talk to counsel.
How much is Slack data worth to AI labs?
Public deals through shutdown services have run about $10K to $100K each. cielo24 sold Slack, email and Jira data together for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Do I need to remove employee names from Slack data?
Generally yes. Buyers and shutdown services remove or replace names and identifiers, and many exclude HR and employee records entirely.
